PT GT Pulse Tune to 174.3kw 07/07/2008 09:51pm
Thought I'd repost the graphs here in the right section.

I'm blown away how good the car feels to drive now. Not only did I get the tune done but had my MY07 WRX F&R calipers fitted, some more silicon and the Walbro GSS342 for safety.

I just want to say how awesome the guys at Pulse Racing are. These guys really know their stuff and were a pleasure to deal with. I've had quite a few people do really bad jobs on the building of this car to date (hmmm... I wont name them - you know who I mean...) but Paul and the boys at Pulse were awesome.

Totally stoked with the results!!!

Relevant mods are
TD04L
3" TBE
Catless uppipe
Process West TMIC
Full Silicon under bonnet
Resonatorectomy
CAI - just a pipe into the guard through standard box and air filter
It's tuned running Caltex 98. Paul's recommendation as he believes this is the worst of all the fuels so any other fuel will produce better results but will also run better when driving.

Re:PT GT Pulse Tune to 174.3kw 08/07/2008 07:01am
nice one.

pretty solid 15 psi there.

just for comparisons sake on a AWD dyno this should be close to 156kw ( using the 10% difference theory )

Now only boosting on cheap fuel Tuesdays .....

Thanks Chris - not sure what you mean by this - I'm tempted to write " a dyno" but I know that is not what you mean. He did a reflash with open source software if that is what you mean.

The other thread is here http://www...0/limit,20/limitstart,0/

To be honest there isn't really much to tell from my perspective. I stuck to the tried and tested mods above and then handed it over to Paul at Pulse Racing and said just give me a safe tune for the mods. Told him that massive kw's was never the intention so something safe and really driveable was the key for me.

EDIT: It was tuned and run on the dyno in 4th gear as well.

What he has returned is awesome - loved the early drive into work this morning - so did the Audi TT that tried it on at a set of lights with 700m of uphill behind it. Don't think the guy could quite believe I could keep in front of him up a hill.

I was like..."No way did he get 174kW with a TD04..."
Then I realised it was an auto on a 2wd dyno and I let out a huge sigh of relief...and pulled my pants back up.
Well done!

Babow............manual with RWD centre diff installed to run on the RWD dyno. Doesn't take them that long to do.....then again they do it often enough.

Auto or manual...it's essentially the same thing when only 2wd on the dyno.
150+kWatw is a tasty first stage for a GT. It will scare quite a few traffic light posers in any case.

The auto boxes are power-hungry even in 2WD mode so they read lower compared to manuals when ran in RWD. Magus and Ignite made about 171kw at the front wheels in their auto GT's with VF35's, big TMIC, silicon bits, exhausts etc on the same dyno, which is about what you'd expect from those mods on a manual Foz at all fours. They are definitely making more power than Paul's beasty, but looking at the power figures alone would lead you to faslely believe that Paul's is making more. It really does start to become very confusing after a while!

BTW, Paul, hurry up with the pics of your wheels and brakes mate!!

They're coming! The cars filthy at the moment and I'd be embarrassed to post the photos!!!

Might do some prelimenary ones from the phone tonight - may hide the dirt a bit!!!

I was going to clean it this evening but if it is raining I wont bother!

As for all the conjecture over what the final number is and whose car is more/less powerful than whose, there's no way to know until they are all on the same Dyno under the same conditions... up until then it is all conjecture and opinion - neither of which is right.

The graphs above show 174.3kw - that cannot be disputed.

That's not entirely true. It is a fact that manual AWD Subarus fitted with centre diff spools exhibit greater than actual power when measured on a 2WD dyno.

I don't think anyone is in dispute as such, but it's only human to want to make comparisons. If people were to look at my dyno sheet and yours it would be a natural comparison as we were both run on the same dyno, similar conditions yada, yada etc. etc. The end result would be quite different though.

Not trying to turn this into a Dyno Queen Sword Fight, but there is more than conjecture and opinion at play here.

Definitely... it is widely accepted that you need to lop off about 20kW from a rear wheel dyno reading from a manual car on Paul's dyno. Lower drivetrain power losses will always give you a higher figure than would otherwise be the case, and this has been demonstrated on countless other Foresters and WRXs. 150ishKW from a TD04L on a GT can happen, whereas 170ish realistically cannot. Judging by the before and after dyno results achieved on the exact same dyno when the Demon went from TD04L power to VF35 power, the Demon is making at least 30kw ATW more than a TD04L'd GT, so this just goes to highlight the discrepancies in figures when comparing graphs without putting them in context.

Once again, as I've said on numerous occasions over the past few days (what's with the dyno discussions lately! haha) none of these recent discussions are to discredit the achievements of anybody. It's all about adding some context to the results and educating people on why results are not always what they seem.

Paul, I checked out your dyno chart again and throughout most of the midrange and top end you've got a 55% power gain compared to before the tune and extra boost! That's what it's all about! W00t!!

Re:PT GT Pulse Tune to 174.3kw 08/07/2008 01:30pm
Maybe I came off sounding a little pi55ed off - I'm not. I'm really happy with the result - and without trying to sound funny - I did it for me...

The comparisons are valid and all that. Pete you are right - there is about 50% more power thrroughout the curve and it certainly feels like that. Whether it is an increase from 100kw - 150kw or any other numbers - the increase is 50% over what it was pre-tune.

So maybe that would be a better comparison when whacking dyno results on here? The percentage increase over what the original run is to what the tuned run is.

At the end of the day - it's all about more power - WOOT!
